Philippines — Spouse & Fiancé Visa Guide
Bringing Your Filipino or Filipina Partner to the United States
Whether you're pursuing a K1 fiancé visa or a CR1/IR1 spouse visa, bringing your case to the US embassy in Manila involves some country-specific documentation that couples in other countries won't encounter. Understanding these requirements before you file helps avoid delays at the interview stage.
US Embassy Manila Process Notes
The US Embassy in Manila handles all immigrant and fiancé visa interviews for Philippines-based cases. Beyond the standard federal requirements covered on our K1 and CR1/IR1 pages, Manila has specific document expectations, confirmed directly via the official State Department Manila embassy supplement:
PSA birth certificate
The Philippine-born applicant's birth certificate must come from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the country's civil registry.CENOMAR (Certificate of No Marriage)
Required from the PSA for single applicants aged 18 and older, valid for one year from issuance. This confirms the applicant has no concealed prior marriage that would affect their eligibility for the visa category.Petitioner CENOMAR, in some cases
If the US citizen or permanent resident petitioner was born in the Philippines and lived there for at least one year after turning 18, they also need a CENOMAR, even though they're the petitioner rather than the beneficiary.Marriage certificate or Advisory on Marriage
For CR1/IR1 cases, an original PSA marriage certificate is required. If the marriage took place in the Philippines, an Advisory on Marriage from the PSA is also requested.
Common Challenges for Philippines Cases
No civil divorce in the Philippines
Age-gap scrutiny
Income sponsor requirements
The same I-864 affidavit of support income requirements applies as with any other country, but the distance and cost of gathering PSA documents can make it more valuable to have every requirement confirmed before the interview date is set, since rescheduling can add significant delay.

Get a Free Case EvaluationDoes my Filipina fiancée need a CENOMAR for a K1 visa interview?
Yes. Single applicants aged 18 and older need a CENOMAR from the Philippine Statistics Authority, valid within one year of the interview.
What happens at the US embassy Manila visa interview if my partner was previously married?
Since the Philippines doesn't recognize civil divorce, a prior marriage generally needs to be resolved through annulment, a declaration of nullity, or, in some cases, recognition of a foreign divorce, before the visa interview.
Do I need a CENOMAR if I'm the petitioner, not the applicant?
In some cases, yes. If you were born in the Philippines and lived there for at least one year after turning 18, the embassy may require your own CENOMAR as well.
How do I bring a Filipino fiancée to the US if we've never been married before?
The K1 fiancé visa process applies. Your fiancée will need a CENOMAR confirming her unmarried status, along with the standard I-129F petition and embassy interview requirements covered on our K1 visa page.
Is the process different for a Filipina wife visa compared to a fiancée visa?
Yes. A Filipina wife visa follows the CR1/IR1 spouse visa process, since you're already married, while a fiancée follows the K1 process and must marry within 90 days of arriving in the US.
